A few old but grim horror movies that are worth a re-watch

With the breathtaking realism brought on by today’s special effects, it can be difficult to get the jitters while watching the faintheartedness of an old horror movie. But, that’s the thing about this chilling genre, even without the illusions and visual tricks of modern animation, these classics have the ability to haunt you long after the credits roll out. Maybe it’s because they can tap into our deepest fears of the unknown or perhaps the clever suspense gives us this intuitive outlook at what goes bump in the night? Whatever it is that gets your devilish desires wired at the thought of a dark, bloodcurdling plot sequence, since your love of horror only seems to grow with time, honor its gruesome expansion by re-watching a few time-honored thrillers.

Amityville Horror (1979)

This chiller follows the story of a family who becomes terrorized by the supernatural forces tied to their old, 18th century home. If strange voices, violent, wide-spread illnesses and unexplained sores to the body weren’t enough to scare away these homeowners, what was? As the couple, George and Kathy Lutz, experience the unseen forces and malevolent nature of the home, it’s clear that someone or something wants them out. The best part is that this spine-tingling, paranormal film was inspired by a true story, the legend of the Amityville Horror.

The Evil Dead (1981)

This daunting tale commences when five friends take off for a little getaway to a cabin in the woods. Encountering strange noises shortly after arriving, they come across a peculiar book (Book of the Dead) and audio tape in the basement. In playing the tape, they release an evil force that’s hell-bent on murdering them all and they’re forced to try and survive the night by defeating the evil dead. Maybe a re-watch of this horror-ific film would reawaken your deadly senses for your love of horror classics?

Children of the Corn (1984)

While there have been several, contemporary adaptations to Stephen King novels and short stories, Children of the Corn remains untouched by modernity. This spooktacular horror movie tells the story of the Town of Gatlin, a small agricultural community residing in the state of Nebraska. Relying solely on their corn crop for their survival, after a failed reaping, the townsfolk must trust that their religious sacrifice will ensure future prosperous harvests. Following the orders of a demonic god, who is referred to as “He Who Walks Behind the Rows,” the children of Gatlin kill all the adults of the community and maintain their ritual of human sacrifice as each child transitions into adulthood. Already 35-years-old, this classic film is still as riveting and grim as the day it hit the big screen!
